The Challenge
Despite strong political commitment to women’s empowerment in KwaZulu-Natal, support for women-led enterprises remained fragmented, difficult to navigate, and uneven in impact. Thousands of women-owned businesses operated in isolation, with limited access to capital, markets, and institutional support. The challenge was to move beyond once-off funding and design a scalable system that could responsibly mobilise grants, verify real enterprises, surface viable opportunities, and enable sustained growth. KZNWAF therefore needed to operate as both a funding mechanism and an integrated ecosystem, grounded in lived realities while capable of delivering long-term economic impact.
The Approach
I led the research, strategy, and design components of the KZNWAF initiative, working directly with senior leadership, government partners, and cross-functional teams.
Insight & Data Transformation
We began by converting thousands of unstructured applications into a structured dataset. Through segmentation, clustering, and pattern-mapping.
Programme & Strategy Design
Using the insights, we developed a tiered support model (L1–L4), aligning businesses to the right intervention.
Digital Ecosystem Build
To move away from outdated paper-based grant systems, we designed a digital stack consisting of a real-time dashboards, automated RAG indicators.
Stakeholder Alignment
Through presentations, reports, and engagements, we connected government, corporates, and funding institutions around a shared strategy.
Governance & Systems Design
Defined roles, rules, and decision logic to ensure accountability, scalability, and long-term sustainability of the programme.

The Evidence
Digital Enablement
The KZNWAF ESD Platform is a digital backbone for tracking and supporting women-led enterprises across their funding and growth journey. It emerged from deep engagement with the data: after analysing over 2,000 applications, the real gap was clear: not demand for funding, but the absence of a transparent, humane system to verify enterprises, track progress, and communicate clearly with both applicants and funders. As the research and design lead on the platform, I translated these insights into a digital experience that makes support visible, measurable, and accountable.

Ecosystem Design
At the heart of the KZNWAF work was a simple but difficult question: how do you move from good intentions and isolated interventions to a system that genuinely works for women on the ground? This ecosystem design reflects that journey. My role was to translate policy intent, stakeholder expectations, and real enterprise data into a coordinated model that verifies women-led businesses, aggregates them into viable economic clusters, and connects them to funding, infrastructure, and markets in a deliberate sequence.
Value Migration
As the data came together, a pattern became impossible to ignore: many women were working hard in low-margin sectors that offered little room to grow and were misaligned with KwaZulu-Natal’s core economic drivers. This framework reflects the moment where insight turned into intention. By analysing sector trends, pain points, and GDP alignment, I helped shape an ecosystem that moves women toward higher-value markets through tailored, sector-specific support.

Personal Reflection
Designing With Responsibility
This project was both grounding and demanding. Sitting with the scale of the data and the responsibility behind it made the work feel deeply human, not abstract. It reinforced a belief that systems design is never neutral, and that how we structure access, visibility, and feedback directly shapes people’s futures. More than delivering a solution, the work felt like holding a trust, and designing carefully around it.
